5 Steps To Make Your First $10K As A Copywriter

The #1 question I get from new copywriters is…

“What does it really take to make $10,000 a month? How can I get there?”

And in this blog, I’m going to share the 5 things they did to make it happen.

Now before I get started, I want to make a big fat disclaimer here – you do NOT need to make $10,000/month in order to be a “successful” copywriter…

That number ($10,000) is just by FAR the most comment amount I hear people asking about… something about those 5-figure months just hits differently I guess.

But YOUR dream copywriting business might bring in $5K, $8K/month or $30K/month (yes I have students making that too)…

Maybe you want to work part-time as a side hustle…

Or travel the world…

Or spend more time with your kids…

The point is, YOU get to decide what feels good to you and build a business on your own damn terms…

Whatever your “magic monthly” number is, I am here to tell you it IS possible and I can help you get there.

So let’s jump right into it…

If I look back at all of my most successful Posse-trained copywriters, there are 5 things they did to build their businesses from scratch (yup, even with ZERO experience)…

And that’s what I’m covering in this blog.

#1 – Learn The Skills 

Sounds obvious… but it needs to be said. 

There are too many people out there who try to shortcut their way to success…

Doing everything and anything they can to avoid taking a course or sitting down to read a freakin’ book…

Or actually putting in the reps to LEARN the skills they need to succeed.

Look – I’m not saying that you can’t DIY your learning as a copywriter. 

I’m not saying that you have to take a course.

But I AM saying that it will take a lot longer to see results that way.

If you want to fast-track your success and become a high-paid copywriter, then you need (YES, NEED) some sort of expert training and guidance… 

Ideally, a legit course with a proven track record of training successful copywriters.

There are a ton to choose from – you can take my 8-week copywriting course… which has been the Launch Pad for many successful copywriters who have hit $5k, $10k, $16k, and even over $30k months. 

But my course isn’t the only one. 

There are so many more.

Take some time to read through the sales pages and testimonials, and if you can chat with a real person who took the course and get their honest opinion, even better…

The sooner you take action on THIS, the sooner you’ll see results. 

You’ll notice that is a common theme throughout this blog. 

Quick action creates quick results.

The longer you sit around and ponder, think, and question every single move… the longer and slower your journey will be. 

There is MASSIVE growth in just deciding to go for it.

I don’t believe copywriters who hit $10K in 6 months are any better than copywriters who take 3 years to hit their first $10K…

Everyone starts at a different place and goes at their own pace.

Everyone is on a different journey… and that is OKAY.

But the journey only BEGINS once you decide to take action…

And often the copywriters who reach success faster are simply better at making decisions faster.

On to step #2… 

#2 – Feed Your Courage

Yup… it’s time to start putting yourself out there!

I know it’s scary, and you’ll feel like you’re not ready and like you need to learn, read, and know a million more things before you actually start…

But you’ll never move through the “beginner phase” if you don’t push yourself outside your comfort zone.

Remember…

Courage comes before CONFIDENCE.

The only way to grow is to go out there and do the damn thing – find your FIRST paying client. How?

There are literally hundreds of ways you can find clients. HUNDREDS.

You can send cold emails, apply to every copywriting job you find, attend networking events, and the list goes on and on…

And while I usually recommend that my students try a little bit of all of it until they find the method they like the most…

That can take a lot of time.

If you want to fast-track your results…

I recommend going deep into ONE method you can really commit to. The one that feels the most natural and flowy to you… and then focus all of your attention on implementing that ONE method.

Because there is not ONE RIGHT WAY to find clients… it’s about finding the RIGHT WAY for you.

Everyone is different and that is amazing… what works for you may not work for others and vice versa.

Once you learn the skills and start putting yourself out there…

The next thing you need is an action plan so you can actually start putting what you’re learning into PRACTICE.

Listen… you cannot complain about how long it’s taking you to get your copywriting business off the ground if you’re not taking action…

But I completely understand that taking action can seem really freakin’ hard if you have NO IDEA where to start or what to do next.

It’s a catch-22 that can keep you stuck, broke and frustrated for a long long time.

How do I know?

Well, not only have I been there myself when first starting my copywriting business in 2011…

But since 2020, I’ve personally coached thousands of copywriters at every different stage in their business…

And 99% of copywriters making $10,000/month or more pretty much all follow the same step-by-step action plan.

Don’t get me wrong, copywriters ARE magical, but we save the wizardry for our words.

• Someone who has been in your shoes…
• Someone who can help you avoid harmful traps and pitfalls that you will inevitably come across along the way…
• Someone who can help you build your business easier and faster…

Because they can give authority, advice and access that no one else can give you.

Let me say that again…

If you want to leapfrog your way to success, you need…

• Build your authority
• Get expert advice and strategies
• And gain access to connections and opportunities that only someone who is 10 steps ahead of you can give you.

Alright, now on the last – and definitely the most important – step on this list. 

#5 – Join A Community

This is the #1 thing that most copywriters are missing. 

Community and mentorship are different.

A mentor is your guide who’s 10 steps ahead of you and can show you the way…

A community is people who are on the path with you and have your back.

So many people downplay the importance of community and I know it’s such a buzzword.

“Community” – it almost loses its meaning when you hear it so much.

So instead say what a community is…

Let me share how a community feels…

A community helps you feel…

• Seen
• Heard 
• Understood
• Safe
• Not Alone

A community helps you SHOW UP for yourself…

Keeps you accountable…

And most importantly, a community BELIEVES in you.

THIS is the BIGGEST difference between copywriters who bring in piecemeal work versus those making a consistent $10K/month…

I can say this from personal experience… 

When I was a freelance copywriter trying to lone-wolf it and do EVERYTHING myself – totally alone… with no support… no mentor… no community – I was struggling. 

I had no idea how to negotiate retainers, how to package and price my offers, how to position myself with more authority, or transition into higher-level services like marketing strategy or content marketing…

But once I started surrounding myself with fellow copywriters, mentors, coaches, and peers who were DOING what I wanted to be doing…

THAT is when everything changed for me…

I started THINKING like an entrepreneur and was challenged, inspired and supported by my community…

Before long my freelancing side hustle turned into a $300,000/year copywriting business.

This isn’t just true for me…

I’ve seen this happen time and time again in my students… 

Again…I’m not saying this is necessary for every copywriter to be successful and hit $10K a month. 

But this will help you get there FASTER.
