Hey Posse, what’s up? It’s Alex
Now, before I get into all the juicy details and tell you which form of marketing I believe is most important to focus on this year…
It’s always helpful to FIRST take a look at the bigger picture.
What is email marketing? And what is social media marketing? How are they different?
What is Email Marketing?
According to Hubspot, “Email marketing is a form of digital marketing that involves sending promotional messages or newsletters to a list of subscribers via email.”
Pretty simple, right?
But I actually like to define email marketing a bit differently…
I don’t believe email marketing is just about sending promotional emails or the periodic yawn-fest of a newsletter.
Modern-day email marketing is SO much more about RELATIONSHIP BUILDING with qualified leads.
Think of it like dating…
You have this thing that someone on the internet *might* be interested in…
Whether that’s knowledge, skills, products, or anything else.
So this person signs up to get something from you and see what you’re all about.
They want to see who you are, what your vibe is, and what you REALLY have to offer.
They read your emails for a while, get to know you a bit better, and then eventually…
You make your move.
That is – you promote your offer to them.
If you’ve done a good job with relationship building prior to this…
Ba-da-bing-ba-da-boom! You just turned a lead into a customer!
Of course – there is more that goes into great email marketing than just relationship building.
Things like knowing your target audience, writing great subject lines that get your email opened, and providing valuable & relevant content…
These are all incredibly important email marketing strategies.
And that is why, my friends, I created this blog…
So, if you want to learn more about all these aspects of email marketing and more…

Alright, now…
What is Social Media Marketing?
Well, to use the same source, here’s how HubSpot defines social media marketing: “Social media marketing is the process of creating content for social media platforms to promote your products and/or services, build community with your target audience, and drive traffic to your business. With new features and platforms emerging every day, social media marketing is constantly evolving.”
So that’s basically a long-winded way of saying…
Social media marketing is your top-of-the-funnel strategy.
This is where you try to find people who are the perfect fit for your funnel.
Contrary to popular belief…
Social media is not just about “acquiring followers”…
For the smart business owner and marketer, what it’s REALLY about is “acquiring qualified leads”.
Your #1 goal is to build brand awareness and create trust so you can…
Grow your email list.
Yup – we’re coming full circle.
You should be using social media to FIND new leads.
To do that, you should create great content that appeals to the type of people you want to enter your marketing funnel (not just anyone).
Get those people to like and trust you through engaging, helpful & consistent content.
Then your top goal should be getting qualified leads on your email list…
So you can continue to build a stronger relationship with them…
And yes, eventually, sell them stuff!
so….
Which Is Better: Email Or Social Media Marketing?
I know this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but…
You need BOTH.
You really should be putting time, effort, and energy into BOTH your social media and email marketing initiatives.
Let me tell you why…
If all you’re looking at is sales, social media isn’t all that impressive. My sales conversion rates on social are significantly lower than my conversion rates on email.
When I look at my stats so far in 2024…
I made $60,000 from social compared to the $360,000 I made from email. I mean, that is like… a 600% difference. LOL.
And it’s even less impressive when you realize my social media following combined is about 10X bigger than my email list.
So you might be wondering – why even bother using social media?
Well stop right there… and take a look at this.
We’ve got over 10,000 NEW EMAIL LEADS from social media alone.
And even though many of them didn’t convert right then and there…
Many of them did eventually convert on email, contributing massively to our email revenue.
These conversions would not have been possible without the leads from social media.
See how they go hand-in-hand?
Remember how I said social media is top-of-the-funnel?
You use social media to get as many people as possible on your email list and into your funnel…
Some of those people are going to be hot leads who are ready to buy YESTERDAY…
Some will be warm leads who need a bit more time…
Some won’t know a damn thing about you and will need A LOT more time…
And some of those leads won’t be a good fit at all.
The goal of email marketing is to move people through that funnel.
From where they came in – at the top.
To the very bottom – when they become a customer. And of course, you allow the unqualified leads to unsubscribe at their leisure.
Make sense?
But now the question is…
YEAH, BUT HOW?!
How do you get leads from social media?
How do you turn your followers into email subscribers?
How, Alex, how?!
