Are your facebook ad hooks actually converting or just burning through your budget?
I ran a landing page split test of 5 different marketing hooks on completely cold traffic from Facebook ads.
And I’m going to share the results with you right now.
Honestly, I was genuinely surprised. Which hook won? You’re about to find out.
Btw, if you’re new here, I’m Alex. Award-winning marketer, copywriter and Founder of the Copy Posse where I teach over 400,000 rad humans on the Internet how to turn words into dollars, monetize their message, and create an online business they love.
If there is anything I’ve learned after nearly two decades as a copywriter, it’s this.
You never know which hook will win. I’m still surprised by almost every single split test I run.
There are days when I’d bet a million bucks that one hook will win, and it flops, and the hook that takes the cake is one I felt the most “meh” about.
Let this be a lesson for you, even the most seasoned copywriters often have no freaking idea what will work best, which is why we always test.
The particular test I’m walking you through today is on a landing page for a masterclass I’m hosting.
And yes, you can still sign up for the masterclass right now.
Now, because this masterclass hasn’t happened yet, I don’t know which marketing hook will ultimately generate the most revenue once it’s all said and done.
But today I’m going to share with you what I’ve discovered already, the data and the lessons learned.
After over 2,250 unique visitors and 458 conversions, all of which came from cold traffic through Facebook ads.
Let’s get into it. Starting with.
THE HOOKS
For this test, I wanted to split-test 5 common marketing hooks that I teach.
First, a “Transformation” Hook: “Turn One-Off Projects Into Predictable Freelance Income.” This was the original version of the page.
The next hook I tested was a classic “Pain” Hook: “Stop Chasing Side Projects & Start Getting Paid On Repeat.”
Next, I tested a “Benefit” Hook: “Better Clients, More Freedom & Predictable Income. It’s Possible.”
Hook #4 was what I call a “FOMO” Hook: “The Smart Freelancer’s Secret To Predictable Monthly Income.”
And lastly, I tested a “Mechanism” Hook: “How To Position, Package & Price Retainers To Land Repeat Clients.”
So? Which hook do you think won?
The Transformation Hook, Pain Hook, Benefit Hook, FOMO Hook or Mechanism Hook?

Ready for the results? Here we go.
THE DATA
Now, the average conversion rate of this landing page across all marketing hooks we tested was 20.3%.
And the spread between the worst and best conversion rate was 10 percentage points, which is massive.
But what surprised me the most about this test is that the hook with the highest conversion rate is not the one that generated the most sales.
To give you a quick rundown of this funnel.
After someone signs up for the masterclass, they are presented with a limited-time offer on the “thank you” or what is often called the “Tripwire” page.
So with this test, we are actually looking at two conversion metrics.
And understanding the difference is what makes this data so interesting.
The first metric we tracked is.
Metric #1: Hook Conversion Rate
This is how many people saw the Facebook ad, clicked it, landed on the page, and then signed up for the free masterclass.
The second and arguably more important metric we tracked wasβ¦
Metric #2: Lead-to-Customer Rate
After someone opted in, they received an immediate offer for my Personal Brand Bootcamp.
As I mentioned earlier, the masterclass hasn’t happened yet, so I don’t know which marketing hook will ultimately generate the most sales once it’s all said and done.
But this metric is a great early signal for buyer intent and, of course, brings in immediate revenue, which helps cover some of our ad spend.
Before I reveal the winner, let’s axe the loser.
THE LOSER: The “Benefit” Hook
Now, even though this wasn’t the lowest opt-in rate among the 5 marketing hooks at 19.8%. I’m calling this one the loser because it had absolutely zero lead-to-customer conversions.
In hindsight, (data always makes everyone a rearview genius, right?) I think this headline could be too broad for cold traffic.
I mean, go ahead and scroll your feed for five minutes and you’ll see dozens of posts promising better clients, more freedom, and more income.
It doesn’t stand out or create any sense of urgency.
I know benefit hooks work well in my social content, but maybe not for this offer to this cold audience.
The lesson here: Specific outcomes beat broad promises.
Don’t be afraid to use specific results, identifiers and benefits in your hooks. The more specific your copywriting, the more believable it is!
Alright, now let’s talk about the second-to-last loser.
SECOND-TO-LAST: The “Mechanism” Hook
This one came in fourth place with a higher opt-in rate at 22.2%, but again, zero sales.
This one surprised me, because in the past, mechanism hooks have performed really well.
But every other time I’ve tested a mechanism hook, it was to a mix of warm and cold audiences, but mostly warm.
This test was for cold traffic only. And I think that makes a significant difference.
This hook assumes the audience already understands why positioning, packaging, and pricing retainers matter.
My warm audience knows that stuff because I’ve spent time educating them, but a cold audience hasn’t necessarily had that education yet.
They don’t wake up thinking, “I really need help packaging my offers”. They wake up thinking, “I can’t find enough clients”.
So while I love mechanism hooks for a more aware audience, this time it didn’t take the cake.
The lesson here is: Test, don’t guess.
Never run a new campaign based on a hook that worked once before, for you or for anyone else.
It was a different offer. A different audience. A different moment in time. The only way to know what works is to test it.
Ok now here’s where things start to get very interesting.
Remember what I said earlier, the hook with the highest conversion rate is not the one that generated the most sales.
Coming in at #3.
HIGHEST HOOK CVR: The “Pain” Hook
This hook got us the highest opt-in rate at 24.4%, and it’s not hard to see why.
It leads with pain immediately.
It creates emotional tension and speaks to something almost every single freelancer has felt at some point.
That “where is the next paycheck coming from” anxiety.
Because so many people have experienced this, the hook casts a wide net.
The more people who relate, the more people will click, and the more people who will opt in. Make sense.
And if we were optimizing just for leads here, this hook is a clear winner, so if you picked this one, congrats.
You were partially right.
While this hook performed well above average on hook conversion rate, of all the leads who opted in here, zero converted on the immediate offer.
The lesson here is: Optimize for revenue, not clicks.
Clicks and opt-ins are important, but they don’t mean sales.
Ok, we’ve got two more hooks to go and the data only gets more telling from here.
Before I reveal the #1 winner in terms of dollars.
We gotta talk about this next one, because it really surprised me.
THE CURVE BALL: The “Transformation” Hook
This was our original marketing hook. The one we started with. And it came in dead last on opt-in rate at 14.3%.
I was shocked. If you had asked me before this test, which hook would win.
I would have 100% said this one. I genuinely think this is one of the strongest hooks in the group.
It’s a clear & specific transformation. It speaks directly to the shift the audience wants to make.
But alas, the data doesn’t lie.
But before we go tossing this hook in the trash, we gotta pay attention to the fact that 1.5% of those leads went on to make an immediate purchase.
So while this hook didn’t perform best at the top of the funnel, it did convert leads into customers after the fact.
The lessons here is: People buy transformation, not “how-to”.
You gotta meet your audience where they are before you teach them how to get there.
And now here’s my honest prediction, and I hope this doesn’t backfire.
Once the masterclass is said and done.
I think these leads from this hook will convert at the highest rate of all five.
Because the transformation it promises aligns so closely with what the masterclass actually delivers.
I could totally be wrong. But that’s exactly why I’m thinking of doing a follow-up post on my complete masterclass funnel, offer and metrics once I have the full picture.
And now for the big reveal. The moment you’ve all been waiting for.
The winner of this “hook battle” in terms of sales.
The hook withβ¦
HIGHEST SALE CVR: The “FOMO” Hook
Did you pick this one? If so yay!! You’re a genius.
With an opti-n conversion rate of 19.4% (which is about average), but a lead-to-customer conversion rate of 2%.
That is higher than any other hook in this test. On a cold offer. Before the free event has even happened.
So what is this headline doing differently?
Two things, and both of them are working at a psychological level most marketers overlook.
First: the word “secret”.
Humans are hardwired to hate missing information. It creates a genuine psychological discomfort. We want to know, wait, what’s the secret? Am I doing this wrong? Does everyone else already know this? Why don’t I?!
That open loop pulls people in.
But more importantly, it pulls in people who are actively looking for an edge. People who are already in problem-solving mode.
Those are buyers.
The lesson here is: Curiosity improves lead quality, as long as it’s tied to a real promise.
The FOMO hook didn’t just create curiosity. It created curiosity around something the audience genuinely wanted.
And the second thing this hook does is use identity language.
It doesn’t just call out “Freelancers”. It calls out “Smart Freelancers.”
That word “smart” is doing something specific. The reader either thinks “I’m smart, so I should know this,” or they think “I want to be the kind of freelancer who knows this.”
Either way, the hook speaks to people who are invested in their own growth. And invested people buy.
And this self-selection is happening at the top of the funnel, before the offer is ever actually presented.
This FOMO hook is our new original, and we are continuing to test from here!
Btw you can check out this masterclass right now.
Until next time. I’m Alex. Ciao for now.
