How to Start Copywriting When You Have No Time: The 1 Hour a Day Method

Copywriting Tips For Beginners

What Does a Copywriting Career Path Really Look Like When Life Is Busy?

You already know you want to do this. You’ve watched the videos, you’ve done the research, you know copywriting is a skill you want to build.

But every single day, you wake up, go to work, come home exhausted, and just like that, your whole day is gone.

Weren’t you supposed to start doing that copywriting thing?

And then the guilt sets in. The “I’ll start Monday” empty promises to yourself.

Or the “maybe this just isn’t the right time for me” self-sabotaging thoughts.

But here’s what I want you to understand, the problem isn’t your schedule.

The problem is that every piece of content out there about starting a copywriting career was written for someone who has unlimited time. And you don’t.

So let’s fix that.

I’m Alex, and in this post, I’m not going to give you a generic blueprint. I’m going to give you the exact hour-by-hour breakdown for building a real copywriting career around a very full life.

Which is exactly how most of my most successful students did it.

And, I’ll be giving you my free guide to help you turn your words into income.

This guide is massive and has way more information than I could ever include in a blog post, so you’ll definitely want to grab your free copy of that

Now let’s go.

Before we get into the breakdown, I need to address the lie that’s been keeping you stuck.

The lie is this: that you need a really big chunk of time to build something real.

And I get why you believe it.

Every “how to start copywriting” video out there shows someone who quit their job, went all in, and made $10K in their first month.

Good for them, and yes, those people do exist. But they are the exception, not the rule.

And honestly? That’s not even close to the most common stories inside my community.

The most common stories are about the people who started in the margins of a full and busy life.

Early mornings before work. During lunch break. Late nights after the kids went to bed. One focused hour at a time.

And I’ll tell you a secret. One focused hour beats three distracted hours every single time.

Here’s exactly how to do it broken up into 5 distinct phases.

Copywriting Career PHASE 1: Learn the Fundamentals (Week 1-2)

Your daily hour = study + write

This is where everything starts. And I want to be really honest with you here, this phase is not glamorous.

You’re not making money yet. You’re not posting on LinkedIn about your new copywriting career.

You are in the trenches sitting down, every single day, and learning the craft.

Now here’s exactly what one focused hour looks like at this stage.

Monday/Wednesday/Friday – these are your study days:

  • 20 minutes: Watch one tutorial or read one chapter of a copywriting book. Notice I said one, not five. Too much information all at once is overwhelming.
  • 40 minutes: Write a practice piece based on what you just learned. Immediately. It could be an ad, an email or a set of headlines.

Tuesday/Thursday — these are your writing days:

  • 60 minutes: Sit down and write. No studying. No researching. Just writing. Fine-tune that email, write a few more ads, or a landing page.

Weekend — one day only:

  • 60 minutes: Review what you wrote this week. Pick your best piece and save it.

Five to six hours a week. That’s it!

Less than most people spend doom-scrolling on a Tuesday.

The rule here is simple: do not move to phase 2 until you have at least 3 written pieces of which you’re genuinely proud. Not perfect, just proud.

This phase is all about building the muscle.

Because here’s what I always say, creativity is a muscle.

And just like you can’t show up to the gym once and expect a six-pack, you cannot write one email and call yourself a copywriter.

The good news? My YouTube channel has hundreds of free tutorials to get you started.

And if you want the fast track, a structured, step-by-step path that takes you from complete beginner to portfolio-ready.

That’s exactly what my 8-week copywriting program, the Copy Launch Pad, is designed to do. You can learn more about it below.

Copywriting Career PHASE 2: Build Your Portfolio (Week 3–5)

Your daily hour = create portfolio assets

Here’s the thing nobody tells you when you’re starting out, you don’t need clients to build a portfolio. But you do need to build a portfolio to get clients.

And before you panic, no, you don’t need to have worked with real businesses yet.

A portfolio is simply a collection of your best work that shows potential clients your skills, whether that’s writing a great hook, telling a story, crafting a blog post or video script things like that.

And writing samples and mock copy (which you just spent weeks practicing when you were writing every day) is more than good enough to start with.

This is essential for building a copywriting career, because 99.9% of clients won’t even consider hiring you if you don’t have a portfolio.

But here’s where most new copywriters go completely wrong…

They throw everything they’ve ever written into a Google Drive folder and call it a portfolio.

Tons of random blog posts, emails and a caption they wrote for their cousin’s bakery — all jumbled together with no rhyme or reason to it.

That is not a portfolio. That is a hot ass mess.

Listen, your dream clients are busy. And they will spend maybe ten minutes – if you’re lucky – looking at your work.

And if they open up your “portfolio” and have no idea what they’re looking at (or why) they aren’t going to spend their time trying to figure it out. They will just exit and move on to the next candidate.

You need to make a powerful first impression with your portfolio. And you don’t do that by showcasing every single tiny thing you’ve ever written.

You do that by showcasing a small number of strategic, high-quality assets that show you understand how marketing actually works.

Think simple: a welcome email sequence, a landing page, a social ad. Ideally, all for the same offer or brand.

This is actually one of the things that makes the Launch Pad so different from any other copywriting course out there — because I don’t just teach you how to write copy. I show you how all of these assets work together, and then I help you build and display your portfolio in a way that actually wows clients.

Copywriting Career PHASE 3: Land Your First Client (Week 5–7)

Your daily hour = outreach

Okay, so your starter portfolio is ready. Now what? Now you go find your first client. You’re ready.

And this is where most time-strapped people completely derail themselves. They try to be everywhere at once. LinkedIn and Instagram and cold email and networking events and — stop!!

You have one hour. You cannot do all of that. And trying to do all of it will guarantee that you do none of it well.

So here is your one-hour-a-day outreach system:

Monday–Friday, every single day:

  • 20 minutes: Find 3 potential clients. I recommend going to a platform like Upwork where you already know these people are hiring for your skillset rather than wasting time on cold outreach where the average response rate is 1-5%.
  • 30 minutes: Write and send 2 personalized applications. Not templated trigger applications. PERSONALIZED.
  • 10 minutes: Follow up on previous applications. Look these companies up on Instagram or LinkedIn. Send one follow-up email or DM.

That’s 10 applications a week, which means about 40 a month.

And you only need one to say yes.

If you have some extra time, try reaching out to friends and acquaintances to ask for referrals. This is another warm outreach approach that works way better than cold outreach.

Take Tracie, one of my students. She reached out to an acquaintance — just one message – and that person immediately asked for dates and times to hop on a Zoom call about her services.

Or Lara, who commented on a LinkedIn post from a local agency owner. That one comment turned into a coffee chat – and the agency owner asked for her day rate and portfolio on the spot.

And Rimsha, who noticed a massive difference between sending outreach messages out of desperation vs sending a personal message to a business you genuinely want to help them grow.

This is what happens when you show up and consistently plant seeds.

Do this until you land your first client and then yay! Move onto…

Copywriting Career PHASE 4: Overdeliver & Get Testimonials (Week 7–10)

Your daily hour = client work + relationship building

You’ve landed your first client. Amazing!!!

Now your only job is to absolutely blow them away.

Repeat after me: overdeliver, overdeliver, overdeliver.

Because here’s what nobody talks about enough, your first client isn’t just your first paycheck.  They’re your first opportunity for a case study, first testimonial, and your first referral.

So deliver exceptional work, then ask for a testimonial.

Then ask if they know anyone else who could use your help.

And here’s where things start to get really interesting.

Once you’ve worked with a few clients, you start to realize something that completely changes the game:

It takes the same amount of effort to close a $500 client as a $5,000 client.

The same outreach. The same calls. And the same onboarding. So why not put more effort into offering additional services to the same client.

So that you’re spending less time finding clients, and more time leveling up?

Sean, one of my students, turned a £600 client into a £6,000 client simply by listening to what they actually needed and offering a full marketing funnel instead of just a landing page.

copywriting client work example

And Greta, who landed a $2,000 a month retainer with a communications agency — handling LinkedIn strategy and copy for them and their clients — because she showed up, did the work, and positioned herself as a strategic partner, not just a writer.

retainer client testimonial

This is how you climb the ladder.

Not by working more hours. By increasing the value you provide.

Copywriting Career PHASE 5: Build Momentum & Raise Your Rates (Month 3+)

Your daily hour = systems + scaling

By this point, you’re not just a copywriter, you’re running a real business.

And this is where systems become everything.

Because at some point, your ceiling isn’t your skill set. It’s your time.

So here are the 3 systems I’d put in place:

  • Discovery System – so new clients can easily find you
  • Client Attraction System – so you’re constantly building your pipeline of potential clients
  • Onboarding System — so every new client goes through the same experience

And here’s what a realistic income timeline looks like if you follow this blueprint and stay consistent.

  • Month 1–2: You’re learning and building. Probably not making money yet — and that’s okay.
  • Month 3: First client. Maybe $500–$1,000.
  • Month 4: With consistent outreach, $2,000–$3,000 is realistic.
  • Month 6: With good systems and client retention, $5,000 is absolutely possible.
  • Month 12: $10,000 a month is within reach if you don’t give up.

Samantha started with Launch Pad, stayed consistent, and is now earning $5,000 a month with two clients.

Liz is earning three times more than she was the previous year — and was finally able to take her family on a proper holiday.

copywriting job

Michael landed a full-time role with a seven-figure business — operating in over 80 countries — through cold outreach alone.

cold outreach example

These aren’t unicorn stories, these are real people who showed up every single day, took consistent action and built a copywriting business from home, from scratch.

The Mindset Piece

Now we have to talk about mindset real quick. Because none of this blueprint works without it.

Here’s the thing about building something in one hour a day — it will feel invisible for a long time.

You won’t see results after week one. Probably not after week three. And that’s the exact moment most people quit…

Right before it starts working.

Those first few weeks might feel hard or even pointless, but here’s what’s actually happening.

You’re building a skill, a habit. You’re building proof that you can show up for yourself even when life is loud and busy and exhausting.

And one day (usually when you least expect it), someone says yes.

And then someone says yes. Suddenly those invisible hours start compounding into something real.

Building a copywriting career is not a sprint. Honestly, it’s not even a marathon.

It is a practice, like going to the gym or learning an instrument.

You don’t do it once and arrive.  You do it every day and then one day you wake up and realize “holy shit, I’m doing it! I’m living my dream life!”

Tara, one of my students, shared something that really stuck with me. She said she’d been paralyzed for months — too scared to take action. And then one day she just did it. She didn’t land a million-dollar client. But she took action. And she called it a win. Because she realized the only thing that had been holding her back was herself.
