From 911 Operator to $7K/Month Freelancer (Her Incredible Story)

You’re about to meet Kee, who went from a struggling single-mom, working 12 hour shifts as a 911 operator.

To a thriving work-from-home mom, earning anywhere from $6500-7000 a month – while only clocking about 4 working hours a DAY.

She is more present with her daughter, happier, making more money, and PROUD of the life she’s created.

In her own words.

“If I can be a face and feeling of connection for another black girl that’s also a single mom trying to figure out how to turn her passion into profits, build her confidence, and feel welcomed in a community that wants nothing but the absolute best for everyone — that’d be pretty freakin cool.” 📣

I’m not going to waste any time in this intro because you NEED to read Kee’s incredible story.

The high-stress nature of her job as a 911 operator left her struggling with PTSD, anxiety and depression.

But worse of all.

She felt like she was missing out on watching her daughter grow up.

She knew she needed to make a drastic change.

But thought it would be IMPOSSIBLE to switch careers without credentials or a college degree.

In this interview, you’re going to hear how Kee took back control of her life and built the life (and business) of her DREAMS.

But before we jump into the interview, I want to take a quick minute to talk about SPARK

Interview with Kee

Kee: Prior to the Copy Posse, I was casually saving lives as a 911 operator. The transition intense, sometimes I have moments where I sit back and I’m like, what am I doing in my life? Like I went from crazy amounts of overtime, 12 hour days. Like I could work as much as I wanted to because crime is always happening and completely transitioned my life into copywriting. And I’m like, am I having a midlife crisis? Why did I switch careers? What am I doing? I have a kid.

Alex: Welcome to the club! But you never. Yeah, yeah, best decision ever. What made you want to switch? What was going on in your life?

Kee: I was actually losing my mind, dealing with death on the other end of my phone every single week. And so I didn’t realize that I was just completely not present. Physically, I was here, but mentally, I was never here. I’ve lived in survival mode my entire life, but this was like very different for me. And one day, my daughter’s like, “You weren’t a monster mom today.” And I was like, “Oh, I was a monster mom?” And she’s like, “Well, sometimes you just yell for no reason.” And I’m like, “You’re right, I do just yell.”

Alex: Yeah, don’t you love it when you just get those cold hard like doses of reality. You’re like, shit.

Kee: Yeah, and I was like, okay, so what’s happening? And then one day, I think it was in COVID, during COVID where it became unbearable for me. Before everything, I’m a black woman and I’m working with the police department. And during COVID, we were dealing with so many different protests. And I’m literally on the phone with people who are being blatantly racist and I just have to sit here and deal with it ’cause this is my job. And so that was when I really checked out and I really couldn’t deal with anything anymore. So I started therapy and that was like night and day for me. I was like, oh, this isn’t actually a normal life for me. So, and I was writing while I was working. So like writing was what kept me a little sane.

Alex: What kind of writing, like just creative writing?

Kee: Well, what I didn’t know at the time was copywriting for my friends. A lot of my friends are entertainers or they have their own businesses and I would write stuff for them.

Alex: I hear that from so many people. Like everyone’s like, Turns out I was already copywriting ’cause might as well make money doing it.”

Kee: Seriously.

Alex: So did you have any doubts? I mean, you changed your whole ass career. I’m guessing you had some doubts. like what was creeping up for you as you were deciding to go down that path?

Kee: I still have doubts. And I think for me, the biggest part of it was like, I can’t be an entrepreneur. First off, my mom was a single mom. There’s no proof of concept for me. There’s no one that has ever been an entrepreneur in my life. And so for me, I was like, I don’t have enough discipline to be an entrepreneur. I’m a single mom. Like I can’t not have a consistent check come in every single one. So like this won’t work for me. And then back to the imposter syndrome ’cause I don’t have a college degree. I didn’t have any like formal training and writing or marketing or any of the things. And so for me, I was just like, this isn’t realistic. I’m always gonna have to have a job, a real job and a side hustle. And this will be my side hustle.

Alex: Well, kudos to you because you’re now the first entrepreneur in your family and you are changing the narrative. You are showing your daughter and everybody else like yes, yes, you can because I did it. I freaking love it. Like it’s so cool. And I love that you said I still have doubts. Like, hello, hello. Like if any of you think that doubts go away, no, if anyone, if any of you look at me and think that like I’ve got all my shit figured out and I never doubt, no, I have to give myself a little pep talks all the time because that is it. And the reality is you guys, like whether you choose the path of entrepreneurship, whether you decide to take this and turn it into a new career or employment, whether you start a totally other business down the road, doubts are normal. There’s no way to be like, “Oh, I’m gonna go down a path where doubt just evaporates.” You know, I think anytime you’re challenging yourself learning something new, doubt is just sort of a real part of it. So then what sparked you to join Spark?

Kee: I think there were a few different things for me. One, it was, again, that I still don’t think that I have that discipline that I need to like really scale to where I want to be. But also something that I’ve learned about myself over the last, I don’t know, maybe six or eight months is that I’m used to do. And now I’m, I’m resting and I’m like, um, that’s okay. I’m being like, you know, and so I’ve had to like reframe that rest is actually a verb too. And that you deserve rest and that you don’t need to do anything to earn it.

Alex: Girl, you’re preaching to the choir because I like, I literally think like that do, do, do. It’s like a little bit of a, it’s like a self preservation, like trauma response. Like, and it can feel extremely uncomfortable to allow yourself to be successful and still rest.

Kee: Yeah. Yeah. And, and so when Spark was presented, I was like, well, this will be the discipline that I need. Like this is the community that will hold me accountable. And so I needed that for sure. Initially, my goal was like, I need to hit $10,000 a month, I need to hit $10,000 a month. And then when I realized I was like, Oh, you are not type A anymore, girlfriend, you need to sit your ass down. And so Spark kind of just became my safe space or I’m like, okay, I can put all of these things that are inside of spark in my own safe I’ll get to that 10k. I’m close, but I’m like, I really like what my schedule is right now. I really like what you’re looking like for me. Um, I came out of the Launchpad and I was working for an ads agency and I went from a copywriter to creative director really quickly. And the type A version of me probably would have loved it. Type B version of me hated it. And so, yeah, I know this isn’t going to work for me. And so even that part, Spark has given me the confidence to really build my career how I want it to look. And and let me know that that is really possible.

Alex: So I I love that. I love that. I know the $10k. I know that that’s like, that is the number. And I get it. Like that is the, that is like the, the, once I hit that, I have made it. I’m rich. And the reality is your copywriting business can look however you want it to.

And so how much on average would you say you make right now? And how much are you working? Like, what is this? What is this type B version of you you look like.

Kee: So this is actually a great moment for me to like self reflect. So I’m probably sitting at $6500 to $7000 a month right now, depending on, you know, what my clients need. I would say consistently. This is so funny to me. Cause when I complain about stuff, I’m like, shut the hell up. I work probably four hours a day.

Alex: Yeah, and you worked to get there. Like you learned the skills, you were really smart about finding, you know, great clients. And this is part of the Spark Roadmap that you guys will see in Spark, is that we walk you through the steps of like, first it starts with getting those one-off projects. And then the Spark Roadmap walks you through the strategy of then being able to bring on retainer clients. And that’s kind of where Kee’s at, where she’s working with multiple clients on retainer, of course. And you could probably correct me if I’m wrong Kee, but there’s probably weeks where they seem to sort of all need the same thing at the same time. And you might have some weeks that are busier, but then you have other weeks where you’re like, I’m chill. This is Kee B.

Kee: Yeah, that’s definitely what it is. Like this week in particular, this week and next are super stacked for me. And then also my daughter plays volleyball. So we’re traveling from Thursday to Monday. So that’s part of right. Why I’m stacked because I need to, yeah, in a front load, everything before I leave. But I get to do that, you know, and I get if I need to take my laptop with me and pop in some copy or some revisions while she’s playing volleyball, like I get to do that. And I’m so super grateful for that.

Alex: So final question, what word of advice would you give to anybody on here who’s feeling a little nervous, who’s maybe afraid to bet on themselves, afraid to join Spark and kind of take the next level.

Kee: I’m giving you this advice and I’m giving myself this advice. Grace, give yourself grace. It’s all new for you. Even if it’s not new for you, you are doing it a different way than you’ve ever done it before. And you are being so intentional about how you’re doing it now or how you’re doing it for the first time. And so not everything’s gonna go right. Not everything’s gonna go the way that you want it to, and some things are going to go better than you expected them to, and all of it you get to experience in your own way. So I think that just giving yourself grace and really leaning into the community that we have here is what will help you continue to build your business the way that you want it to be.

Alex: I love that. Kee, thank you. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us.

Kee: Of course.
